Description: Palomares is a longer version of Dublin Canyon
fruistand with one additional climb and 15-20 additional miles. With the
exception of the steep Palomares climb (and the ever present climbs in and out
this ride is fairly flat. It departs the fruitstand route at Dublin Canyon
and heads south along Palomares almost all the way to Fremont. From there, it's a long flat trek
northward along Foothill Rd.
which becomes San Ramon Valley Rd.
The return options are the same as fruistand. On this map, we return via
Distance: 84.15 miles
Climbing: 6603 ft.
Time: 5-6 hrs.
Mile 0.0 - Sproul
Plaza to Tunnel Road.
Mile 11.51 - Turn left at light on Joaquin Miller.
Mile 12.11 - Turn left on Redwood
Rd. There is a long gradual descent into the
Mile 14.40 - Go past the intersection with Pinehurst. There is a
climb and a fast descent.
Mile 23.74 - You will eventually go over a small hump into Castro Valley. Turn left on Heyer Ave.
Mile 24.49 - Turn right on Center
St. This is where the Dublin Canyon
route diverges from the Crow
Mile 25.18 - Turn left at light onto Castro Valley Rd. Head up small
incline and then under freeway overpass.
Mile 27.23 - Turn right on Palo Verde.
Mile 27.59 - Turn right on Palomares
Rd. Here we depart from the fruistand road and
enter one of the gems of the East
Bay. The next 10 miles
are peaceful and isolated, second only to Morgan Territory.
Palomares climbs gently into the woods before it pitches up steeply for the
last 1.5 miles. The wooded descent on the other side is fast and technical,
lots of fun!
Mile 37.28 - Carefully turn left onto Niles Canyon Rd. This is a busy road, so
watch out for cars and stick to the shoulder. There is usually a tailwind on
this strech so you won't notice the slight uphill.
Mile 41.48 - Once in Sunol, exit Niles Canyon Rd. and cross under (or is
it over?) the road to Kilkara Rd.
You'll know this is the right place if you immediately cross some train tracks
and then are able to take a right onto Foothill Rd. This road is mostly flat and
it goes all the way North. Turn on cruise control and rejoin these directions
Mile 55.95 - Fruit stand! From here on out, the directions are the
return route from fruitstand.
Mile 59.25 - Bear left on Hartz through the center of Danville.
Mile 64.35 - At the end of the long straight section, head straight
at the light (instead of turning right under the freeway).
Mile 64.60 - Turn left on Castle
Mile 64.98 - Turn right on Lilac
Dr. This is an easy turn to miss.
Mile 65.50 - Turn left on Newell
Mile 65.80 - Turn left on Olympic Blvd. This should look familiar as
rides often come out this way. Olympic Blvd. is the bar in the dumbell of many
longer rides, so there are many ways back from here. Everyone has a favorite.
Mile 67.75 - When you reach the T-intersection, go straight onto the
Mile 68.15 - Turn right off the bike path at the first opportunity,
then left onto Olympic Blvd.
Mile 68.80 - Turn right on Second
St. then left ahead on Mt. Diablo Blvd. The ride through Lafayette sucks.
Mile 70.70 - Bear right onto El Nido Ranch Rd. for the Orindawoods
Mile 72.56 - After a short steep pitch, turn left onto Orindawoods
Dr. for the descent into Ordina.
Mile 73.71 - Turn right onto El Camino Pablo.
Mile 75.72 - Turn left on Wildcat
Canyon for the climb back
This is another killer at the end of a long day.
Mile 81.54 - Head left at the 5-way intersection to descend via Euclid.
